I will most definitely go to college and then end up going into some engineering career, I would not want to do this as a carrier. This has let me learn about what is possible when it comes to machining and has now lead to a path that i could take for a job during college. Altho I do not plan on this as my career i could see myself being a machinist working at a shop during college. I will for sure want to go to college for some kind of engineering, but I am not quite sure what kind of engineering I want to do. Having a background in machining can lead to many job possibilities as I know how to do it and will be able to work with them even if they are a different kind.

This project was important because the last time the website had any changes made on the website was the day it was made. There had been no updates to the design or information on the website for many years and it was in desperate need of fixing. I just started with a plank page and started to redesign the website from scratch till it looked nice and complete.
I made a meaningful contribution to the company by working production parts that needed to be made when they were short hands, I also helped in creating a new website for them that could help with their appearance online. This work is meaningful to my education is a way that will help me when I find a job. It will help me know what is and is not possible to machine and what the limitations are on designs for parts that may need to be machined.
This internship helped me know that I definitely do not want to do this as a carriere, I found it to be very monotonous and not very interesting. It was a great thing to learn about but it does not really match what I am interested in going into. My view did not really change my viewpoint of life after highschool, it just helped me add onto what I already thought about it.
For my internship project I am working on redoing the website and making it look a lot nicer as the last time it had been updated was probably before I was born, I already know how to make websites and update them to make them look more professional. I will need to take pictures of parts and of both the inside and outside of the building, I have been having one of the people on the business side of the company help with my updating it with photos and with what text to put on it.
Depending on when I finish my website I may start on a second project where I make signs/posters that go on the wall and on the electrical boxes to warn people of the dangers they might possess (high voltage, sharp objects, wear respirator, wear safety glasses) that would be in both english and spanish, as most people who work here speak spanish. Part 1: He works here because his father is the owner of the company and 3 out of his 4 other siblings also work here. He went to college for a few months before dropping about and saying it's not for me. He acquires most of his skills from on the job and from people who previously worked here that taught him their knowledge. He main responsibilities are to set up the machines and run the machines along with making sure all the parts are being made correctly and helping anyone who needs it. The company is a small family owned cnc machine shop and many of the people who work here are related to each other, there is no one set typical day as everyday changes but something that would be an average day is running parts on a machine and then when those are finished setting up the machine to run a new part. It is import to get along with people so that you can talk to them and that you can help each other. It is import to man up to your mistakes and learn from them so you don't do it again. It is necessary to be trained on how to do this job and it takes many years to get all the knowledge you will need as there are always new problems coming up and that you should never be afraid to ask for help if you don't know how or don't feel comfortable doing something. Part 2: There are no real connections between my internship and what I have done in school but there are very good connections between what I have done in robotics with my internship. I have worked with mills before and with a 2 axis cnc mill but I had never worked with a “real” cnc. I have worked with parts that had a close tolerance and I have previously designed CAD models that we had to make. This is all really closely related because here we make these parts on 4 axis cnc mills and lathes, and by having a basis about this field I did not learn everything from the start and was not just lost in the woods on day one as i had already had an understanding what would be said and what would happen. Some skills I need to get better at is remember the exact details of the parts and knowing what decimal place they mean when they say a number. I am getting to and from internship by driving there, it is about the same distance from my house as the school is so the commute is not much different from that of going to school in the morning the only difference is that my sisters are not with me. What I found most striking about the workplace is how it can be both so large and so small at the same time. In the building that we are in is a large wearhouse that hold a bunch of large machines making the space look alot smaller than it really is. Everyone here is really nice and is very welcoming. If i have any kind of questions they will answer them and help with what i need. Everyone here has known each other for many year and they all are very casual with each other. What strikes me is how long the day feels when doing work, and how time time never seems to pass and in some cases just goes backwards. I am excited about learning how the machines run and how to set everything us so that in the future I can use the knowledge again if i have the ability to work on machines like this again. Something I am worried about is messing up a part or or breaking something, this is because many of the parts that are made here are using in the medical field or being used for the US Marines. I am worried that I will mess up a part that ends up being sent to the customer and then having a bunch of problems because the part was faulty.
Your Name: Piper Hallack
Name of Business: alvarado micro precision machining Profession: Machinist Your 1st Period Teacher: Teodora Nikolova Contact Person (On Site):Francisco Felix Describe your first impressions of the place. Focus on descriptive language and making the reader picture where you are. I had already been to the place before this job shadow day so I knew what to expect of the physical place and how the company operates. The business is a warehouse kind of building with different kind of CNC mills and lathes, along with multiple computers and desks spread through to run the software that converts 3d models to a series of numbers that the machines can understand. Describe what you think a typical work day is like at this site. How big is the site? How many people work there? What is the atmosphere? Business? Is business casual? The site is two buildings separated by a parking lot, the first building is where I was the whole day but I did go a look at what is in the second building. It is a fairly large space filled with many large machines. There are two shifts of people who work there, but I only met the people that worked the day shift, there were about 20 or so people working there. It was more of a casual place where as long as you get the work done everything is good. There were no real formalities that were in place. As the dress code is more of a t-shirt and jeans, there was no need to be super formal. Who will you interact with on a daily basis? Who will you “report” to? How often? In what protocol/fashion? I will be working with the people in the shop in all different “departments”. I will be working with my mentor. What do you think the business's general work policies are (tardiness, absence, etc.)? Don’t be late, do your job, do your job well, and stay safe while doing your job. If I need to not work a day, make sure my mentor knows and plan accordingly for the rest of the week. Describe the dress code. What does that mean to you? The dress code is a t-shirt, pants, and closed toe shoes. It is a CNC machine shop, there is no formal dress code but should wear something that is appropriate for machining. This means normal clothes for me during the hours I work there. Please write a reflection about your Career Day experience. What do you expect the professional world there to be like? The place I went to is very different from many companies, it was very casual and informal, this is partially due to what the company is for as it is a family owned CNC machining company and not large corporate business. It seemed like everyone there knew each other better than just as coworkers. I am very different from what all the other companies I have shadowed at were like. Many of the guys loved the work they did and were not just there because it's a job and they need to make money, but rather because they like doing what they do. In what ways do you expect your high school classes and the skills you have learned to apply to this profession? Class: Math Skill: Basic arithmetic, trig, geometry Application: For machining and making sure you are doing everything correctly if you have to check the size or offset different tools so everything is made correctly. Class: I don't really have any way to convert Bio, Chem, or humanities over to this profession besides writing notes on paper about what was done. Skill Application Class: Engineering class (never had it but am guessing what could be transferred over from it) Skill: How machines work, basic metal working skills Application: That is what this profession is, working with machines and metal most of the time but on occasion plastics. Knowing how machines work and what is and is not possible with them. |
